From page to stage — a bold Southern musical rooted in mystery, grit and heart.

“Way DEAD Upon the Suwannee River” is a thrilling, genre-bending story, set in a small Southern town on the banks of the Suwannee. It is rich with atmospheric characters, unexpected turns, and the kind of quirky, darkly humorous tone that stays with you.

Now, this novel is evolving into a full-scale musical theatre production. Our goal is to take this unique story and re-imagine it for the stage — with vivid songs, bold characters, and the moody, swampy Southern setting as a living part of the performance.

WHY THIS STORY MATTERS

It tackles themes of community, morality, survival and what happens when the “understory” of a town erupts.

With its blend of humor, mystery, Southern gothic atmosphere, and musical potential, the project stands out.

It offers an opportunity for dynamic ensemble storytelling, strong female roles, ensemble movement, and evocative staging.

OUR VISION

We envision a production that immerses audiences in the world of the Suwannee River region and the town of Whitecross. — through evocative music, atmospheric lighting, and design that brings the swamp, the under-belly of town, and the quirky charm of the locals to life. We want this musical to be both entertaining and emotionally gripping, with broad appeal.

We are currently in the development / pre-production phase, seeking collaborators, cast, creative team, and importantly — funding to move this from concept to stage.

WHATS NEXT?

• Finalise the book adaptation & libretto

• Commission original songs (or complete the score)

• Workshops and readings to refine characters and staging

• Casting the principal roles and ensemble

• Securing a venue and production schedule

• Launching fundraising and donor programs to build the budget
